Course: JUST 1250. Law Enforcement Theory and Practice

Description: Focuses on the theory of law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels of government. Police ethics; past, current, and future changes in law enforcement policies and practices will be discussed.

Expected Learning Outcomes:
We expect students completing this course to be able to:

understand the history of the police in the United States and the organization of both police departments and public and private security.
appreciate the personal side of policing, including the following: becoming a police officer, the police role and police discretion, and the police culture.
understand police operations, including both the traditional and current approaches, police in the community, and police and the law.

debate critical issues in policing, including the following: police ethics and deviance, women and minorities in policing, technology in policing, and specific police problems and issues.
