Course: JUST 4530. Community Corrections
Description: Community based corrections philosophy, policy, and
programs are discussed, with focus on probation, parole, diversion, and
intermediate sanctions. Relationship of community and institutional corrections
is discussed. May be offered concurrently with JUST 6430.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
We expect students completing this course to be able to:
- understand the relationship
between community based corrections and protection of the public.
- understand the philosophy
of community based corrections.
- trace the historical
development of community based corrections.
- compare community based
corrections and institutional corrections in terms of purpose, staffing,
and costs.
- understand advantages and
disadvantages of community based corrections.
- understand the types of
offenders for whom community based corrections is most appropriate.
- understand relevant legal
issues in community based corrections.
- understand diversion,
probation, and parole.
- understand intermediate
sanctions.
- understand the concept of
restorative justice.
