Course: JUST 4570. Corrections: Rights and Responsibilities
Description: Detailed examination of jail and prison staff and
inmates' rights and responsibilities in relationship to 18 U.S.C. 241-242 and
42 U.S.C. 1983, deprivation of civil rights legislation.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
We expect students completing this course to be able to:
- understand the historical
development of inmate and staff legal rights and responsibilities.
- understand the "hands
off" doctrine of the courts toward corrections.
- know what led to the
involvement of the federal courts in corrections policy and practice.
- understand the key court
cases that have impacted corrections.
- know how to protect the
legal rights of inmates and staff.
- know how to protect staff
from successful inmate lawsuits.
- know the impact of federal
and state legislation on corrections.
- understand consent orders.
- understand the role of
federal court monitors in corrections.
- understand basic corrections
law in prisons, jails, and community corrections.
