Course: JUST 4602. Legal Research Seminar
Description: Detailed study of legal bibliography, law library
research, and case and text analysis resulting in the supervised production of
legal research assignments. May be offered concurrently with JUST 6602.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
We expect students completing this course to be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the
federal and state courts and the jurisdiction exercised by the respective
courts.
- demonstrate knowledge of
terminology and search strategies involved in the process of legal
research.
- demonstrate the ability to
identify and retrieve primary and secondary print and electronic sources
of law.
- properly construct citations
for all reported opinions.
- accurately state the names
of the various research publications and identify their use and contents.
- identify the various
publishers of various research publications.
- demonstrate knowledge of the
procedure to locate current authority.
- understand the ethical and
professional responsibilities of the lawyer and legal assistant in legal
research.
