OUTCOMES
Course: JUST 4620. Legal Writing
Description: Detailed study of writing skills and preparation of
legal documents including legal briefs and memoranda of law. This course will
integrate legal research and analysis skills to produce legal documents and
effective legal communication. May be offered concurrently with JUST 6642.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
We expect students completing this course to be able to:
- demonstrate they have
developed critical thinking skills, which includes the ability to evaluate
the criteria used to assess the quality of the reasoning process.
- write all documents
accurately, concisely, and clearly; eliminate redundancies, legalese,
ineffective modifiers, and other unnecessary words; Use correct grammar,
punctuation, and spelling.
- correctly cite cases and
statutes.
- write clearly organized
legal arguments that include fully developed legal principles, accurate
application to a problem, and concise conclusions explaining the
resolution of the problem.
- edit documents for
substance, style, and organization.
- write an objective
memorandum that thoroughly analyzes a legal problem, considers alternative
outcomes of the problem, and reaches a definite conclusion consistent with
that analysis.
