Course: JUST 4630. Victimology

Description: Characteristics of victim/offender interactions; the effects of criminal acts upon victims and their families; and posttraumatic stress disorder and its implications for victims and the criminal justice system are addressed. May be offered with JUST 6630.

• understand the historical development of the victim throughout history.
• understand the victim/offender relationship.
• understand the role of the victim in the criminal and civil justice systems.
• understand the potential impact of criminal acts of victims and their families.
• understand victims' programs, including victim compensation and victim restitution.
• understand what has led to the current increased role of the victim.
• understand factors that contribute to the likelihood of victimization.
• know potential victim risk management and reduction strategies.
• understand post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its potential impact on the victim and the criminal justice system.
