When Alice McKinney sat down to take the Certified Public Accountancy Examination in 1981, she was to become one of less than 10 percent of those sitting to pass. Today she attributes that success to a focused mind and a good education.
Ms. McKinney began working for the State of Alabama in 1966, starting as a clerk and working her way up to accountant, and then division chief. In that time she was twice selected to serve as interim director of ADECA, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, and won several awards, including the Bishop N. Barron State Employee of the Year title.

As president of the Alabama State Employees Association, Ms. McKinney travels throughout Alabama on speaking tours. Such lectures sometimes expand to include non-state employees when topics such as motivation and leadership are concerned.

Ms. McKinney said one of her strongest beliefs is that community service is a responsibility shared by all people and similar dedication is required when mapping out a career. "It's a matter of laying out a plan and I definitely did that. When I finished school I immediately sat for the CPA exam and passed it. Without my credentials, I would never have had the opportunities I've had."
