Sponsored by Auburn University Montgomery and the Air Force Association
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.
These will be in the form of scientific equipment for the teacher to use in his or her classroom. The prizes are
in the amounts shown below:
FIRST PLACE: $500
SECOND PLACE: $250
THIRD PLACE: $250
After being notified, the winning teachers will select their equipment from Fisher Scientific by forwarding to AUM
the item numbers from the Fisher catalog (available on-line). AUM will then order the items, pay for them and invite teachers and
students (parents, too) to come to the AUM campus and collect their awards. We will take photos for publicity purposes.
For schools located a distance from Montgomery, we can ship equipment to teachers.
The 3 winning students will also receive a copy of a book on crystal growing.
A panel of scientists and educators will judge the crystals and select the winners.
Ideally, crystals of alum are colorless and transparent.
A good crystal will also have eight faces, all more or less equal.
A crystal over one inch in length can be grown in only a few weeks under the right conditions.
These criteria will be used in judging all crystals.
The student reports will also be considered in the judging process.
